For the Sandwich:
- 4 slices of sourdough bread (or rye/crusty artisan bread)
- 8 oz roast beef (freshly cooked or deli-sliced)
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or cheddar/Swiss)
- 1/4 cup horseradish sauce (or Dijon mustard)
- 1/2 cup caramelized onions (optional)
- 1/2 cup gravy or au jus (for dipping)
For Toppings (Optional):
- Fresh lettuce
- Sliced tomatoes
- Pickles
- Fresh herbs (parsley, chives, or thyme)
Instructions
- Toast the Bread
- Lightly toast or grill the bread slices to prevent sogginess.
- Warm the Roast Beef
- Heat the roast beef in a skillet or microwave until warm.
- Layer the Ingredients
- Spread a thin layer of horseradish sauce or mustard on each slice of bread.
- Add a layer of roast beef, followed by caramelized onions (if using).
- Top with a slice of cheese.
- Melt the Cheese
- Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Add Toppings
- Garnish with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, or herbs as desired.
- Serve
- Serve immediately with a side of warm gravy or au jus for dipping.
